Between 13th March and 21st March, 1916, 9th King’s Royal Rifle Corps of 42 Brigade, 14th Division were in the front line trenches to the south-east of Arras. The enemy shelled these positions every day and on 20th  March, 14 men, including Ernest Burns, were killed when the dug-outs in which they were sheltering, collapsed upon them.
